Guru Nanak Dev

I am not the born; how can there be either birth or death for me? I am neither a child, a young man, nor an ancient; nor am I of any caste. God is one, but he has innumerable forms. He is the creator of all and He himself takes the human form. Let no man in the world live in delusion. Without a Guru none can cross over to the other shore. Even Kings and emperors with heaps of wealth and vast dominion cannot compare with an ant filled with the love of God. Sing the songs of joy to the Lord, serve the Name of the Lord, and become the servant of His servants. Death would not be called bad, O people, if one knew how to truly die. ~ Guru Nanak Dev

Ancient records indicate Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth took place the 3rd day of the waxing moon, or Sudi 3, month of Vaisakh, Vikram Samvat (SV) year 1526 of the Indian calendar or 14 March, 1469 of the Julian calendar. When converted to the modern day Gregorian calendar, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birth prakash occurred 14 April, 1469 A.D. and this is the historic date attributed to his birth on the Nanakshahi Sikh calendar. However due to a number of circumstances involving legendary fanciful tales, competing holidays, choosing a date by random pick, and astrological influences, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday is celebrated officially at pooran mashi, or during full moon in late fall.

In year 544 of the Nanakshahi Sikhism calendar, Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday prakash gurpurab is observed on pooran mashi, 28 November, 2012.
